Expert Mustafa: When grocery shopping, you need to watch if Africa will buy more grain

CAIRO, 18 November – RIA Novosti. The extension of the groceries deal will have a positive impact on African countries, but whether deliveries to Africa will actually increase remains to be seen, Ahmad Mustafa, director of the Cairo-based Center for Asian Research, told RIA Novosti.

Earlier, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan announced that an agreement had been reached to extend the food agreement by 120 days. The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the extension of the agreement.

According to Mustafa, the decision is correct, but he reminded that the Russian side is angry that the lion’s share of the grain supply goes to European countries, not to the poorest in Africa.

“This decision will have a positive impact on African countries, where the supply chains of products are disrupted. I believe that now after the extension of the agreement, we will see whether African countries can buy products, thanks to the tracking of the routes of ships carrying grain.” “Will they benefit from the agreement or will the ships go to the West again, as they did in the first phase of the agreement,” he said.

He noted that in light of the strengthening of Moscow’s relations with a number of African countries, the issue of food security has come to the fore.

According to the latest UN data published in mid-November, most of the grain from Ukrainian ports was exported to Western European countries – only 4.8 million tons, while 4.1 million tons were sent to the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. , third place is Africa with 1.4 million tons, and fourth – Eastern European countries, to which 306.8 thousand tons are sent. In total, during the Black Sea Initiative period, the total volume of supplies exceeded 10.7 million tons, and the leaders in terms of food received are Spain (about 2 million tons), Turkey (about 1.4 million tons), China (1.2 million tons) million tons), Italy (950 thousand tons), Netherlands (about 654 thousand tons).

In Europe, Russia’s claims are refuted by stating that its ports serve as transit points from places it leaves around the world, including in Africa’s poorest countries. According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Moscow has asked the UN for statistics on final buyers of grain exported from Ukrainian ports as part of a food deal, but there seems to be no response yet.

The grain agreement, signed on July 22 by representatives of Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and the UN, includes the export of grain, food and fertilizer to the Black Sea from Ukraine’s three ports, including Odessa. The Joint Coordination Center (JCC) in Istanbul is responsible for coordinating the movement of ships. The contract expires on November 19.

Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out in September that the West exports most of Ukrainian grain to its own provinces, not to needy countries in Africa. At the same time, the part of the groceries agreement on Russian exports of food and fertilizers did not work, as Vasily Nebenzya, the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, pointed out.
