Gorbunov: Avtotor plans to start production of electric vehicles under the brands of new partners
MOSCOW, November 22 – RIA Novosti. Valery Gorbunov, chairman of the board of directors of the holding, said in an interview with RIA Novosti that Avtotor plans to start producing electric vehicles under the brands of new partners in the future.
According to Gorbunov, we are talking about three new car brands that the top executive did not reveal, while Avtotor has found new assembly partners. The production launch is scheduled for the end of 2022, but he did not specify which models will be used.
“Initially these will be cars with internal combustion engines. Electric cars are a possibility in the coming years, the market will show,” he said.
“New partners were chosen not only according to their wishes, but also according to our conditions. Among them, the preparation of specific plans for localization after one and two years of market development. Traditionally, today – automobile production with internal combustion engines, then a deeper localization of models and more more electric vehicle production. Based on our needs, a partner must have electric cars in their line or have the appropriate developments for their production. In our case they already produce electric cars,” added the senior manager.
At the same time, Avtotor continues its plans to produce an electric car of its own design, with production scheduled to begin at the end of 2023. These will be compact electric vehicles that can be easily changed inside and outside. As Gorbunov clarified, the first samples have already been created. “Which brand it will be, no answer yet. We are not sure if there will be a conditional ‘Avtotor-auto’, everyone will rush to get it,” he said.
Autoholding “Avtotor” was founded in 1994 in Kaliningrad. The enterprise became the first in Russia to start the production of cars of foreign brands. Production has been carried out since May 1997, the capacity of the factory is about 250 thousand cars per year. Until the spring of 2022, Avtotor produced mainly models of the German brand BMW, as well as South Korean Kia and Hyundai, at the moment the assembly of cars of these brands is suspended.
