Degtyarev: Polyus will return a gold deposit in the Khabarovsk Territory to development

HABAROVSK, November 24 – RIA Novosti. The development of the Chulbatkan gold deposit in the Khabarovsk Territory by the Polyus company will allow to return it to commercial operation and create employment, reported Governor Mikhail Degtyarev.

The regional head held a meeting with Sergey Zhuravlev, vice president of government relations at Polyus, outlining the prospects for this gold mining company’s presence in the region after the withdrawal of Canada’s Kinross Gold. Polyus reported in June that it purchased the Chulbatkan gold deposit for $140 million.

Degtyarev on the Telegram channel “The Chulbatkan gold deposit in the Khabarovsk Territory will be developed by the largest Russian gold mining company Polyus.

He noted that according to preliminary calculations of experts, reserves in Chulbatkan are estimated at more than 90 tons of gold. The Governor’s Office stated that the company will start preparing projects after the completion of the studies. “At the same time, it is planned to solve a number of socially important problems, such as the construction of kindergartens, schools and related facilities in the villages of the Polina Osipenko district,” the head of the district said.

According to the governor, there are large deposits of tin, copper and precious metals in the Khabarovsk Territory. At the end of 2021, the region ranked third in the Far Eastern Federal District, while it ranked fourth in Russia as a result of 27 tons of gold production.

As the Regional Council of Ministers reported yesterday, gold production in the region increased by 14% in the January-September period. The extraction of precious metals is one of the leading industries in the Khabarovsk Territory. 39 enterprises of the mining complex operate on its territory, most of which specialize in the exploration and extraction of ore and placer gold. According to the Regional Ministry of Natural Resources, the amount of tax breaks from mining companies to the regional budget for nine months exceeded 12 billion rubles, the number of employees reached 11,000 people.

Polyus is the largest gold producer in Russia and one of the world’s leading gold mining companies in terms of production volume and mineral resource base. Key enterprises and projects of the group are located in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Irkutsk and Magadan regions, as well as in Yakutia. By the end of 2021, the company had reduced its gold production by 2% to 2,717.4 thousand ounces (84.5 tons).
