Mamer spokesperson: EC never considered banning gas imports from Russia
BRUSSELS, 25 November – RIA Novosti. EC spokesman Eric Mamer said the European Commission had never discussed the possibility of banning Russia’s gas supply.
“We never thought of banning Russian gas. <…> “We never reported that we were working on a gas ban in Russia, and that hasn’t changed,” he said.
On October 7, the European Union implemented the eighth package of sanctions against Russia, which includes a legal basis for setting a ceiling price for the shipment of Russian oil to third countries by sea. The limit is planned to be introduced this year from December 5 for oil and February 5, 2023 for petroleum products. At the same time, a ceiling on gas prices is being discussed.
Commenting on this initiative, President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia will not supply anything abroad if it goes against its interests. The head of “Gazprom” Alexei Miller said that the unilateral restriction of prices by the European Union would be a violation of the basic terms of the contract, and this would entail the cessation of exports.
The West stepped up its sanctions pressure on Russia after the launch of a special military operation. This has led to higher prices for electricity, fuel and food in Europe and the US. Vladimir Putin described the policy of containing and weakening Moscow as a long-term strategy for Western countries. According to him, the sanctions dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy. The head of state noted that the main goal of the West is to make the lives of millions of people worse.
