Abramchenko: Turkey bought grain for rubles, a similar solution is being developed for Egypt

MOSCOW, January 22 – RIA Novosti. Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko said in an interview with RIA Novosti that Turkey has successfully concluded the agreement to pay in rubles for grain, now the Russian Federation is working on such deliveries to Egypt.

Talking about commercial deliveries, he noted that Russia has not yet systematically switched to payments in national currencies, but “this is a trend”. According to him, at the moment the Bank of Russia is negotiating with the central banks of other states to develop mechanisms for such mutual settlements, and this applies not only to the supply of food.

“As a final example, I can only mention an agreement with Turkey on food supply when the settlements are in rubles. The first sign has been successful. Egypt is our biggest, yes, and we are starting to work on such a transition as well. them,” he said.

Deputy Prime Minister also emphasized that grain, oil and fat products are the most demanded in this regard. “We are not yet selling the latter for rubles, but we are working on this issue, for us settlements in rubles are one of the priorities,” said Abramchenko.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, not only Gazprombank, but also the RSHB will participate in such transactions in the future. “And even within the framework of the contacts through the UN on the grain agreement, the package solution, which should be implemented in the interests of the Russian Federation, this is one of the conditions there – the return of Russia. We have connected Ziraat Bank to the international clearing system,” he explained.

In December last year, Abramchenko told RIA Novosti that Russia first delivered grain to Turkey in the autumn in exchange for rubles, the first experiment was successful.

The head of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation Dmitry Patrushev said earlier that in May 2022, the department will discuss with the countries of the Middle East and North Africa the possibility of switching to ruble settlements for deliveries in grain tenders. As well as reviewing the settlement mechanism to exclude European banks from it.
