ANKARA, February 24 – RIA Novosti. A source told RIA Novosti that active negotiations between Ankara and Moscow on the “gas hub”, suspended due to devastating earthquakes in southeast Turkey, will resume in the near future, and that the project is a priority for the Turkish side. .

Earlier, Russian Ambassador to Turkey Alexei Yerkhov, in an interview with RIA Novosti, said that negotiations for a gas center between the Russian Federation and Turkey are continuing and it is wrong to predict the outcome. According to him, we’re talking about a very long-term project designed for years, not months, so it’s very important to get everything “on the right track” from the very beginning.

“Yes, the ‘calamity of the century’ (destructive earthquakes in southeast Turkey) has made some corrections. Active work is being done to eliminate the consequences, processes in the economy are restarting. Active negotiations will resume in the near future, “said the agency’s interlocutor.

According to him, the project is a priority for Ankara, this has been repeatedly stated at the highest level.

“As for the cost of the project, the preliminary evaluation was discussed during the work of the delegations (Turkey and Russian Federation).

The Presidents of the Russian Federation and Turkey had previously instructed that the issue of establishing a gas center in Turkey should be studied in detail. Through this centre, it will be possible to transport, in particular, gas supplies from damaged Nord Streams. Russian Federation Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Novak said, “We are not only talking about establishing a trading platform in Turkey, but also improving infrastructure and increasing supply in the south. Other countries can join from here, Algeria, Qatar and Azerbaijan also supply gas to Europe from the south.

On February 6, earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.7 and 7.6 occurred in Kahramanmaraş at intervals of 9 hours. After hundreds of aftershocks, the tremors were felt in 11 provinces of the country and neighboring countries, including Syria. According to the latest data, more than 43.5 thousand people lost their lives in Turkey.
