IMF: Accelerating growth of Chinese economy could negatively affect gas prices for Europe

WASHINGTON, April 14 – RIA Novosti. Alfred Kammer, Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Europe Department, said the accelerating growth of the Chinese economy could negatively impact the cost of gas for European consumers.

“Obviously, if China’s recovery this year is stronger than we expected, it risks putting pressure on prices,” he said in a question at the IMF and World Bank spring conference in Washington.

Kammer stressed that natural gas purchases to Europe last winter were secured by, among other things, a reduction in supply to China due to the zero-COVID policy.

“Certain risks remain for energy security next winter, mostly in terms of prices,” he said, assessing the situation in Europe for the coming winter.
