Kaspersky expert Novikova: Russian companies are better at responding to data leaks than Western companies

ALMA-ATA, May 6 – RIA Novosti. Russian companies, unlike organizations in other developed countries, including Western ones, are very sensitive to reports of possible leaks and respond carefully to such threats, says Yulia Novikova, an expert in Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence. He told RIA Novosti.

Experts talked about the company’s experience when analyzing information about external threats to their customers on the dark web, when they began to notice announcements about other large companies on the dark web and decided to inform them about the threats.

“We found about 300 such incidents in 2022, 43 of which were Russia-related, and in half of the cases companies were ready to respond quickly, they wanted to get all the information about the threat. Half is a very good indicator, overall Russian companies are great in that regard. ” he added.

However, according to him, other developed countries usually do not respond to such messages at all. “There have been events that concern European countries, maybe these are the characteristics of the mentality, we sent them all the information, we explained that everything is free, we would be happy to help, but basically we did not get a response. all the cyber incidents that often lead to leaks,” explained the expert.

At the same time, as for the number of “streams” of data on Russia, there were fewer leaks compared to last year, when more than 1.5 billion Russian records leaked into the network, according to the company’s estimates. In 2023, “But the general trend is that there are fewer cases, but the leaks themselves are bigger, bigger companies are getting hacked. And if they used to post almost every other day, now everything has become less frequent, but something has gotten more attention. . ,” said. Novikov.

In January, the President of the Russian Federation instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to consider imposing turnover penalties against companies that leaked personal data. In December last year, the Ministry of Digital Development offered to impose a fine proportional to the amount of data entering the network for the first breach and an inverse fine for the second breach. In March, the head of the department, Maksut Shadayev, announced that the final draft of the bill on turnover penalties for leaking personal data is ready.
