Putin signs law banning registration of trademarks imitating geographical names
MOSCOW, May 28 – RIA Novosti. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed A law prohibiting the registration of trademarks that may mislead the consumer as to the place of manufacture of the goods. The document is published on the official portal of legal information.
Necessary changes were made in the Civil Code. Their reception was initiated by Valentina Matvienko, Chairman of the Federation Council, and Lilia Gumerova, chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture.
According to the law, signs containing, duplicating or imitating geographical indications or containing the names of origin of the goods cannot be registered as a trademark if the use of such a mark will be associated with a certain place by consumers and this would constitute an “infringement of legitimate rights”. interests of the exclusive right holder for the appeal of the geographical indication or the place of origin of the goods”.
