ROSTOV-ON-DON, October 25 – RIA Novosti. According to the administration of the governor of the Astrakhan region, the international forum “International transport corridor “North-South” – a new concept. Rapid access to premium markets of the East, Asia, Africa and India” was opened in Astrakhan on Wednesday.

Government institutions, business and export-import companies, industry and agriculture, banking and logistics representatives from more than ten countries, including Russia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, attend the event.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the forum, Astrakhan Region Governor Igor Babushkin emphasized that it was not a coincidence that Astrakhan was chosen as the location of this important international event. “In new geopolitical conditions, traditional logistics routes are changing globally. In this context, the role of our region as a strategic region and an important link in the trans-Caspian section of the international North-South transport corridor is significantly strengthened.” His words are quoted in the message.

Babushkin noted that a special port economic zone was created in the Astrakhan region. Currently, construction of a large container terminal is underway, as well as modern terminals for the transshipment of grain and vegetable oil. Its commissioning in 2024 will increase the handling capacity by 3.3 million tons.

In addition, dredging the Volga-Caspian Sea Canal will allow shipping companies to use ships with increased capacity in the Caspian Sea and reduce shipping costs. The results of the study are already visible: cargo traffic in Astrakhan ports increased by 14% in 2022, and the positive dynamics continue this year.

Session participants also discussed the needs and recommendations of Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Middle Eastern, Asian and African countries, interaction with banks under sanctions, prospects for the development of the international North-South transport corridor and other current issues. .

The forum was organized by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Energy of the Astrakhan Region, the RusIranExpo group of companies, the Caspian International “North-South” Integration Club and the Astrakhan State University named after Tatishchev.
