Ministry of Industry and Trade: Domestic clothing brands in the Russian Federation should be given priority over Chinese brands

MOSCOW, November 28 – RIA Novosti. Deputy Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Oleg Bocharov said that in terms of consumption, Chinese clothing brands in Russia should not be given more priority than domestic brands.

“It will still be cheaper to produce (clothes) in China and bring them to Russia… We must balance production: in no case should a brand from China be of higher priority than ours in terms of the consumption of our market federal products”, – Bocharov at the BRICS+ Fashion Summit told. He noted that goods from different countries should be equally accessible on the Russian market and asked colleagues from other countries to help young Russian designers enter foreign markets.

The deputy head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade added that last year Russian factories complained about the lack of tailors, the high price of the material, logistics problems and the lack of product assortment. However, the retail market grew by 6-7 percent in 2023, and there will be even greater growth next year.

According to him, a huge number of products now come from China – 7.5 billion tons per year, while a lot of goods also come as counterfeit “through third countries”. Bocharov said that while creating trade in the fashion industry within the BRICS countries, Russia will enter the market with certified products and quality.

He also explained that Russia is a country that “changes clothes a lot” and is more interesting than China in creating and consuming clothes within the framework of cooperation with BRICS countries. “Our consumers should not have any problems in terms of wallet or product variety,” said the deputy head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The BRICS+ Fashion Summit event will take place in Moscow from 27 November to 2 December. In this program, experts from Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, Africa and the CIS discuss the problems of the fashion industry, the prospects of the common market and interaction options between countries.
