German expert Hueter predicted EU gas market would collapse due to the selfishness of its members
MOSCOW, July 16 – RIA Novosti. The European gas market could collapse if some EU countries refuse to share fuel with neighboring countries in case of scarcity of energy resources, Michael Hüter, director of the German Economic Institute, told the publication. Welt am Sonntag.
“There shouldn’t be a situation where individual EU members stop deliveries to neighboring countries. It’s in the interest of Europe and Germany, which is trading gas with all its neighbors,” the economist said.
Hüter warned that business and consumers will face the disastrous consequences of this decision if EU member states only consider their own interests and cut off supplies when there is a shortage of fuel.
Earlier, the German publication Handelsblatt wrote that European countries would find it difficult to conclude solidarity agreements that should ensure uninterrupted fuel exchange in the event of a famine.
After Russia’s special military operation to demilitarize and demilitarize Ukraine, the West increased its sanctions pressure on Moscow. Many countries announced the freeze of Russian assets, calls for Russia to stop energy even got louder. These measures became a problem for the West itself – they led to an increase in inflation, food and fuel prices.
