Source: Safe corridor in the Black Sea will start working in the coming weeks, there are guarantees
ISTANBUL, July 22 – RIA Novosti. A source familiar with the negotiations in Istanbul told RIA Novosti that a safe corridor for the passage of grain-carrying vessels in the Black Sea could soon begin to work.
“We hope for that in the coming weeks,” the source said.
He also confirmed that the parties gave guarantees.
According to the source, the passage of the ships will be monitored by a UN-sponsored monitoring group in Istanbul, already ready for operation.
The interlocutor of the agency described the process of preparing documents on the grain issue as complex.
“Of course there were difficulties. And until the last moment. In this sense, the negotiations helped us to find the same consensus, the common denominator. <...> There was a lot of stuffing and misinformation. I must say that all parties, especially Russia, displayed a very constructive approach.”
As information has been given to RIA Novosti under the administration of the President of Turkey, the document on the grain issue is scheduled to be signed today at 16:30 in Istanbul. Turkish leader Tayyip Erdogan and UN Secretary General António Guterres, who arrived last night, will attend the ceremony.
The UN has repeatedly voiced the threat of a food crisis due to grain shortages.
The West accused Russia of opposing the supply of Ukrainian grain to world markets, which Moscow categorically denied. At the same time, the Kyiv authorities themselves created many obstacles: in addition to setting fire to grain in the port of Mariupol, Ukrainian troops mined parts of the Black Sea, which prevented the transportation of food by ships.
Vladimir Putin noted that Russia does not interfere with the export of grain from Ukraine, and if Kiev clears the ports of mines, the ships can leave without any problems.
