An exhibition dedicated to Efimov’s voyage to Egypt in 1834 was opened in the Museum of the East.
MOSCOW, November 11 – RIA Novosti. An exhibition dedicated to Dmitry Efimov was opened in the Eastern Museum. According to the press service of the institution, he was the first in the history of Russian Egyptology to bring artistic sketches of ancient architecture from a trip to the Land of the Pyramids.
Efimov was a graduate of the Imperial Academy of Arts. And he spent almost a year in Egypt (1834-1835). During this time, he created a series of 40 works.
The exhibition is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the deciphering of the hieroglyphic script by the orientalist Jean-Francois Champollion. And the organizers tried to convey “the atmosphere of passion of ancient Egypt in the early years” after this discovery.
For example, the exhibit includes a portrait of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Amenemhet III from the collection of the National Music Museum. Archival documents describing the relationship of Efimov with figures of the first half of the 19th century are also presented – Gogol, President of the Imperial Academy of Arts Olenin, Admiral Greig, Egyptologist Ippolito Rosellini.
The exhibition “From St. Petersburg to Aswan: Dmitry Efimov’s Journey to Egypt (1834 – 1835)” will run until January 15, 2023.
