MOSCOW, November 22 – RIA Novosti. Pablo Milanes, Cuban composer, singer, songwriter and co-founder of the Cuban music movement “Nueva Trova”, has died in Spain at the age of 77, the agency reported. Efe with reference to sources.

According to sources, the musician died on Monday evening after staying in hospital for more than a week in Madrid, where he has lived since 2017.

He was hospitalized on 12 November due to “the consequences of a series of recurrent infections that have greatly affected his health over the past three months,” according to a statement from Milanes. He was also diagnosed with an oncohematological disease a few years ago.

Milanes is reported to be one of the most recognizable voices in Cuban music, releasing more than 40 albums during his career and winning the Cuban National Music Award and the Latin Grammy, among others.

Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero reacted to the news of the musician’s death on Twitter, writing “Cuban culture is in mourning”. He also offered his condolences to Milanes’ family and friends.

The “Nueva Trova” music movement arose in the early 60s-70s of the last century and combined traditional “trova” (author’s song) motifs, elements of jazz, rock and pop music, as well as the garde aesthetics of avant-garde and revolutionary movements.
