Goodnight Oppie True Story of Prime Video Documentary
Available to stream on Amazon Studios from November 23, 2022, Goodnight Oppie documentary is about one of the most recent and talked about space travel. The critically acclaimed documentary tells the story of Opportunity, affectionately nicknamed Oppy by a team of scientists (hence the name), a robot that became part of NASA. His story quickly aroused interest, as scientists initially designed the rover to last up to 90 calendar days. Much to my surprise, and after six months of travel, since arriving on Mars, Oppie has resisted for 15 years, never interrupting communication. Launched on July 7, 2003 and arrived on January 25, 2004, the rover continued on its mission for more than a decade until a dust storm hit. The impact prevented Oppie’s solar arrays from recharging their batteries, and his mission came to an end as a result. It was officially closed on February 13, 2019 when all attempts to contact Oppie failed.
And his story today is contained in a documentary film available to everyone. Ryan Whitethe director, who has always had a soft spot for space, so he convinced himself to tell the story of a rover that lived 15 years on Mars:
I wanted to make a documentary about space – most of it is educational but never character based. Thus, there is something unique about Oppie’s story, as it contains images taken from the NASA archive that no one has ever had the opportunity to see.
Also produced by Amblin Television Steven SpielbergGood Night Oppy is approximately 105 minutes long and had its world premiere during the 2022 Telluride Film Festival. The visuals are produced by Industrial Light & Magic and in the original language the narrator is Angela Bassett.
