Lawyer: Pugacheva and Galkin* could be denied Israeli citizenship if they concealed their baptism

MOSCOW, December 7 – RIA Novosti. Singer Alla Pugacheva and humorist Maxim Galkin * can be deprived of Israeli citizenship if, while receiving Israeli citizenship, they hid from consular control the fact of their adoption of Christianity, because they were Jewish on their mother’s side, this is due to the operation of Israeli laws. The RIA told News Eli Gervits, a prominent Israeli lawyer who is a member of the Supervisory Board of the Russian Jewish Congress (RJC).

Thus, he commented on a news report by RIA Novosti, which was broadcast on the 13th channel of Israeli television, questioning the legality of Galkin and Pugacheva obtaining Israeli citizenship. Khanan Akhitov, the former head of the consular department of Nativ (an organization involved in repatriation of Jews from other countries to Israel), told the TV station that this may be because Galkin, a maternal Jew, confessed. He is a Christian like his wife and the couple married in a Christian church.

Commenting on the investigation, Russian Chief Rabbi Adolf Shayevich told RIA Novosti that a baptized Jew could convert his faith to Judaism in order to obtain or retain Israel, according to the Congress of Jewish Religious Organizations and Societies in the Russian Federation (KEROOR). citizenship, but this is a long and complex process.

“If the repatriated are Jewish by their mother and also if they actually professed Christianity before being sent back and hid this fact during the consular check, then there is a possibility of depriving them of Israeli citizenship. If they have the right to return to their country through their father, Gervits told RIA Novosti. Answering the question of whether Galkin * and Pugachev can become Israeli citizens, then they are not Jewish and no claims should be made against them, but even here Israeli officials sometimes show inappropriate and illegal creativity at the wedding.

Gervits added that a church wedding in itself cannot be grounds for deprivation of Israeli citizenship. The “Law of Return,” he said, indeed denies the right of Israeli citizenship to “Jews who have lost their Judaism”—that is, those born to a Jewish mother but voluntarily converted to another religion and fully identified with it. and performs its main rituals. Also, if a Jew who converts to another religion can lose the right to obtain Israeli citizenship, then he cannot be an Israeli, because a Jew and an Israeli citizen are different categories.

“Hiding this fact may also be the basis for the deprivation of citizenship that has already been granted. However, not every performance of a religious ceremony is “renunciation of Judaism.” – no … That is, if a Jew acquires citizenship and then changes his religion, then no one can take away his citizenship. Citizenship can be revoked on the basis of conversion to another religion, then hiding important facts,” explained the lawyer.

He said Israeli citizenship can be claimed by both parents who are Jewish down to the “third generation”, that is, grandchildren. The exception is minor grandchildren who, upon repatriation of their parents, obtain a residence permit in Israel and can also acquire citizenship after living in the country and serving in the army. Minor children receive citizenship before they are underage and without connection to military service.
