The idea to make the movie came to Arsen Gottlieb, who was the general producer of the movie. He added elements from the fairy tale “Mistress of the Copper Mountain” by Pavel Bazhov to the story. And in Gaidar, the main characters are five and six years old, in the movie they are five and ten years old.

“Our Chuk is a dreamer, when he travels to the taiga he takes his favorite toys with him instead of warm clothes (they later become his faithful helpers). The image of the children’s father was embodied by Vladimir Vdovichenkov. And already in the movie “Father” he played the father of the character of Andreev. While the casting of Chuk and Huck was in progress, the tape had not yet been released. Kott recalls that after the creators of the latter learned that it was such a coincidence, they “thought it was worth keeping this duet.”

“We’ve finally decided: these are two completely different films, it’s wrong to focus on who is playing with whom and in what role,” explains the director.

The role of Huck went to Yuri Stepanov, the youngest of Yuri Stepanov (the actor died in a car accident on March 3, 2010, his son was born on March 30, 2010, named after his father).

“Yes, I knew his father, Yuri Stepanov. But our meeting was not in favor of Yura. He has been playing in the theater for a long time, for example, there are children’s characters in the Pyotr Fomenko Workshop. Yulia Snigir played the brothers’ mother. Her character in the movie is a singer.

Field shooting was carried out in the Perm region in mid-January. The filmmakers also thought of shooting everything in Crimea with artificial snow, but the shots wouldn’t come out of steam and the audience wouldn’t believe such a winter story.

The locations impressed the team so much that they rewrote the script a bit for them.

Shooting was difficult. Sometimes it took three hours to reach the place. The weather has changed and due to heavy snowfall, tractors cleared the roads twice a day.

We took a lot of time to prepare for working with animals – a bear, horses, goat and wolf dogs (hybrid dog and wolf).
