In December 1943, it was decided to open the exhibition “Heroic Defense of Leningrad”. The building of the old Agricultural Museum in Salt Town was chosen for its placement. The grand opening of the exhibition took place on April 30, 1944. In 37 halls with a total area of ​​​​approximately 40 thousand square meters. meters housed some 38,000 exhibits, from a soldier’s letter and meal cards to warplanes and tanks.

At the same time, against the background of the so-called Leningrad case, in 1949 the museum was closed for “re-exhibition”, in 1951 its buildings were transferred to the army, and in 1953 it completely ceased to exist.

In April 1989, the executive committee of the Leningrad City Council decided to recreate the Leningrad Defense Museum within its historical walls, and a few months later it was grandly inaugurated. Front-line soldiers, residents of besieged Leningrad and their relatives, search teams and associations donated household items, uniforms, weapons, awards, documents and memorabilia to the museum. Now the collection includes more than 54 thousand exhibits.
