Bologna, 1940s. A mentally retarded young man with literary aspirations falls madly in love with a US Army man after a simple glance. A year later, the exceptional nature of the case will force him to leave and live in the American Midwest, in a house adjacent to, but separated from, a vile vegetable garden in which the soldier’s elderly mother lives. The woman is in despair over the disappearance of her daughter, who has not reported any news about herself since the end of the conflict, writing that she will marry an Italian. Thus, the young man begins a very intense search for a girl, which will force him to experience a particularly dramatic situation, right up to a completely unexpected ending, in Italy.
