Billie Joe Armstrong to renounce US citizenship due to Supreme Court ruling on abortion
WASHINGTON, June 27 – RIA Novosti. CNN reported that Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong announced his intention to renounce US citizenship following the Supreme Court’s decision to ban abortion.
“I’m leaving my (US) citizenship and moving here,” Armstrong said in a speech in London.
The musician also expressed his disappointment with the current situation in the United States.
Some American artists have been harshly critical of the abortion ban in recent days. Billy Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Olivia Rodrigo in particular were opposed to it.
On June 24, the Supreme Court reviewed the 1973 Roe v. Wade case and allowed US states to regulate the field themselves, breaking constitutional guarantees for the right to terminate a pregnancy.
The court’s decision was criticized by US President Joe Biden, who was joined by other politicians and opinion leaders in the country. Thousands of protests were held in American cities, including Washington, New York, and Los Angeles, where police detained dozens of people.
