Post: EU leaders to discuss options to limit gas prices on Thursday

Categories

European Union leaders meeting next Thursday and Friday will discuss various options for lowering gas prices, over which they have been divided for weeks, according to a draft of the summit seen by Reuters.

The 27-nation European Union has been at an impasse for weeks over how to cap gas prices as part of efforts to contain rising energy prices, as Europe grapples with a winter of gas shortages in Russia and a cost crisis. Possible stagnation and survival.

Gasoline prices have soared since Russia cut flows to Europe amid Ukraine’s invasion and Western sanctions, prompting most EU countries to call for a cap on gasoline prices, though they differ on how.

Some countries, including Germany, Europe’s biggest gas market, are still opposed. These countries say imposing a price cap could increase demand for gas or make it harder to attract supplies from global markets.

The European Commission is expected to propose measures to tackle the crisis ahead of the leaders’ meeting on Tuesday.

An EU diplomat said many countries that support gas restrictions are concerned that the Commission is not putting forward the options it has proposed.
