Post: Habeck announces special rule for heat pumps

People who buy heat pumps in 2022 should not suffer from electricity prices. According to Economy Minister Habeck, a special arrangement should be made for them.

With the planned electricity price brake, a special arrangement should be made for heat pumps. This was announced by the Federal Minister of Economy, Robert Habeck (The Greens). After a “heat pump summit” in Berlin, he said this applies to heat pumps installed in 2022.

Habeck said the rationale for the electricity price brake in response to the energy crisis is to have a government-backed quota based on the reference year 2021. “However, if you installed a heat pump, i.e. you saved gas and therefore consumed more electricity, then you would actually be penalized according to the logic of the politically desirable behavior – i.e. stay away from fossil fuels.”

Heat pump owners worried about high electricity prices

According to the Federal Heat Pump Association, many customers who have had a new heat pump installed are very concerned that the electric price brake will not be able to cover their heating costs. Because they were heated with gas or oil in the previous year, they could not show any consumption from the previous year.

Habeck said that the transition to heat pumps is also the right path economically. It will also be increasingly encouraged. Jan Brockmann, board member of the Federal Association of the German Heating Industry and head of Bosch Thermotechnology, said manufacturers want to make their target of 500,000 appliances per year “feasible”. Germany could become Europe’s largest heat pump market.

1.4 million heat pumps face 14 million gas heaters

About 1.4 million heat pumps are currently installed in Germany, and by 2030 there will be six million. 154,000 new devices were installed in 2021, and according to Habeck there will be 230,000 this year.

For comparison: Currently, around 14 million gas heaters heat homes and apartments in this country.
