The transplantation of Langerhans cells or “pancreatic islets” is changing the lives of diabetics in France.

-

For many years, people with unstable type 1 diabetes have been waiting for a cure: after many years of experiments, the French health authorities have already approved the transplantation of Langerhans cells, that is, pancreatic islets.

Frenchwoman Valerie Rodríguez, who requested the treatment, considered the decision revolutionary, and at the hospital in Strasbourg, on the 24th of last month, this woman was one of the first therapists in the country to transplant the organ as part of the ongoing treatment.

This woman says that before this surgery she tried all treatments to control her blood sugar level, but all attempts were unsuccessful. He had a hypoglycemic coma while driving down the highway, so you can see him gulping down sugar to keep from falling asleep.

But since the last operation, Valery’s psyche has been rejuvenated, and he says that he no longer has fluctuations in blood sugar, and thanks to this technique, the body feels less tired.

This technique consists of transplanting Langerhans cells, pancreatic cells responsible for insulin secretion, into the patient’s liver. The cells to be transplanted are taken from the body of a brain-dead, non-diabetic donor. 🇧🇷

And if Valery does not feel any special side effects, he confirms that, as with any organ transplant, this operation requires lifelong anti-rejection treatment.

As for him, Valery expects to take 7 pills in the morning and 6 in the evening, confirming that due to the frequent lack of blood sugar and rest, he prefers breakfast to pills.

20 years of research

The first clinical trials of this treatment were carried out in 1999 in Canada and then in Europe, which continued for two decades. And in 2020, the highest health authorities approved this type of operation for some patients whose health was not stable for a long time.

Lille hospital became the first French health institution to perform such operations as part of routine care, and the tradition was later adopted by Strasbourg hospital, as doctors consider it a very important step for patients, as is its clinical apex. search.

This treatment affects a few hundred patients each year, a very small percentage of the 370,000 people with type 1 diabetes, according to the French Diabetes Association.

reproductive stage

Since the authorization of this treatment, it has been implemented in France, and hospitals in Paris, Grenoble and Montpellier have received approval from regional health agencies to start transplanting these organs.

The authorities are trying to protect the safety and quality conditions of patients, and the deputy director general of the Biomedical Agency, Professor Michel Tsimaratos, says that the therapeutic arsenal to care for patients is being enriched and “this is what we have to remind us”. “Like he said.
