Post: World Cup 2022: Luis Enrique, sacked as Spain coach, will be replaced by Luis de la Fuente

The Spanish Football Federation has sacked the national team’s first coach, Luis Enrique, after La Roja sat out the Qatar 2022 World Cup final on penalties against Morocco and named Luis de la Fuente as his successor.

“President Luis Rubiales and sporting director José Francisco Molina communicated the decision to the coach,” the RFEF said in a statement on Thursday. Enrique, 52, managed Spain in 2018 and took them to the semi-finals of the European Cup last year.

He also said that de la Fuente “will perform on Monday and start his career in March during the 2024 European Cup qualifiers, which are scheduled to take place in Germany”.

De la Fuente (61) has played in Spain’s youth system since 2013, having played for Atlético, Bilbao, Sevilla and Alavés as a left-back in the 1980s and 1990s.

Spain, the 2010 champions, did not manage to advance to the quarterfinals of the World Cup with a surprising defeat against Morocco and the hammers after an overwhelming 7-0 victory over Costa Rica, the biggest in its history in the Cup of the world.
