The Verdi union is planning a warning strike at Berlin BER Airport on Wednesday. Passengers need to be prepared for flight cancellations and delays.
Due to the warning strike announced at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport, affected airlines have canceled a large number of flights, some of them delayed. When asked, Lufthansa announced that flights to BER were cancelled. Customers were offered alternatives such as flight or train travel on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Easyjet, now BER’s parent airline, advised customers to check the status of each flight online. The company’s website showed on Tuesday that many flights were delayed to Thursday and a few were cancelled.
Gave: Warning strike on Wednesday
Therefore, diversions to other airports are not planned. Ryanair has announced online that customers will be notified of changes to their flights via email or SMS. According to operator Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, only two transfers are planned (as of Tuesday, 15:00) to Leipzig/Halle and Dresden airports.
The Verdi union announced a warning strike in the BER on Wednesday. Employees in aviation security, ground handling and airport company are urged to stop working full time. BER announced on Monday, January 25, that there will be no passenger traffic as central work areas for airport operations have been hit.
2018 strike memories
The last major warning strike with similar consequences was a few years ago: in April 2018, hundreds of flights across Germany had to be canceled as collective bargaining for municipal and federal employees failed to progress. In eight federal states, tens of thousands of employees went out of business during a warning strike.
In addition to airports, urban transportation, kindergartens, clinics, administrations and indoor swimming pools were also affected in many places. Airports were affected at that time because even after privatization, large numbers of municipal employees continued to work, among other things, in baggage and identity control.
