A poll by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that 57% of Americans support banning the sale of tobacco products.
The survey was conducted in 2021 and around 6,500 participants were asked about their support or rejection of measures to restrict the circulation of tobacco products.
Last year, the government of US President Joe Biden proposed banning the sale of cigarettes with special flavors, such as mint and fruit.
He also proposed forcing the tobacco industry to limit the amount of nicotine in cigarettes sold in the United States to non-addictive levels.
“These findings may reflect federal and local efforts to ban all sales of tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes, to reduce tobacco use and promote health equity,” the study authors wrote.
Despite the poll results, many Americans still support the sale of cigarettes.
New York Governor Cathy Hochul’s proposal to ban the sale of flavored tobacco and e-cigarettes in the state has sparked a heated debate on the issue.
