Post: Treasures of the Roman Empire: Herculaneum

Categories

An intact skeleton has been discovered in the ancient coastal city for the first time in more than 25 years. This finding allows researchers to use modern research methods to find out why the volcanic eruption in Herculaneum occurred differently than in the neighboring city.

The lost City

Beneath a protective layer of ash five times thicker, some of the best-preserved buildings in the entire Roman world are revealed here, but there are no spectacularly petrified corpses here like in Pompeii. Still, intact skeletal finds at Herculaneum are key to the research. Today, science can reliably reconstruct the extent to which Pliny the Younger’s traditional report was accurate and what happened in the dramatic hours of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

In their search for evidence of the ancient Romans, researchers encounter findings that shed light on the lives of elites, middle and lower classes, and slaves. With “Treasures of the Roman Empire”, archaeological sites turn into real treasures that need to be unearthed.
