Many bestselling authors are alarmed: They fear that their literary works will be stolen by ChatGPT. Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin is also a plaintiff.
17 authors sued the company behind the chatbot ChatGPT for intellectual property infringement. Among them are well-known writers such as John Grisham, Jodi Picoult and Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin. They accuse OpenAI of “systematic theft on a massive scale.”
This is the latest legal action brought by authors concerned that AI-based programs are using their copyrighted works without permission. In documents filed in a US federal court in New York, the authors allege “blatant and damaging infringement of registered copyrights”.
Writers Union: “This Theft Must Stop”
They describe the ChatGPT program as a massive commercial enterprise based on extensive and systematic theft. The case was organized by the Writers’ Union association. Other plaintiffs include David Baldacci, Sylvia Day, Jonathan Franzen and Elin Hilderbrand.
“Great books are often written by people who spend their careers and even their lives learning and perfecting their craft. To protect our literature, authors must have the ability to control whether and how their works are written by generative AI,” Rasenberger said.
ChatGPT Company: Respect Authors’ Rights
OpenAI said the company respects the rights of writers and authors and believes they should benefit from AI technology. Fruitful discussions are taking place with creatives around the world, including the Writers Guild.
