High fuel prices are a special burden for drivers this year. But you can still save – if you top up at the right time. Figures from ADAC prove this.
Fuel prices are not only high right now, but fluctuate particularly strongly during the day. In July, ADAC determined an average of twelve cents difference between peak morning rush hour and favorable evening time. It is cheapest to refuel between 21:00 and 22:00.
In July of this year, ADAC repeated its daily fuel prices survey that it conducts each May.
Tank discount does not change price curves for fuel
Due to the turbulence surrounding the gas and diesel tax cut, many experts expected the typical development to change over the course of the day.
But even though the differences are very high at the moment, the basic system has remained the same: Prices rise from 5am and peak at 7am. Both diesel and E10 prices were eight cents above the daily average in July. After this peak, the price curves of both fuels move down in waves.
Almost no fuel price changes at night
From the early afternoon, the price is often below the daily average. Just after 4 pm until 10 pm, it is consistently at least two cents with slight fluctuations.
If you top up just before 7 PM or just before 9 PM and just before 10 PM, you can save even more: up to four cents compared to the daily average. There are almost no price changes throughout the night.
The twelve-cent difference between the E10 and the diesel is relatively large. ADAC has been reviewing once a year in May since 2015. There has never been such a big gap between morning and evening for the E10, just once for Diesel: it was an extraordinary 17 cents last May.
