Asylum for Russian conscientious objectors?

-

Some top politicians are seeking asylum for Russian conscientious objectors and fugitives in Germany. The background is the partial mobilization of the Kremlin for the Ukrainian war.

After partial mobilization in Russia, coalition and opposition politicians campaigned for easier admission of Russian conscientious objectors and fugitives to Germany. Irene Mihalic, First Parliamentary Secretary of the Greens parliamentary group, told the Rheinische Post: “Anyone who does not want to take part as a soldier in Putin’s bloody war of aggression against Ukraine in violation of international law and therefore fled Russia. the right to asylum should be recognized.”

Are the threatened punishments sufficient as a reason for asylum?

“I already see the current legal situation as sufficient reason for asylum,” SPD faction lawmaker Dirk Wiese told the newspaper. Johann Wadephul, vice-president of the Union fraction, told the “Funke Mediengruppe” newspapers that humanitarian visas now need to be interpreted generously and comprehensively.

This should also apply to soldiers who openly oppose the Putin regime.

After the Kremlin announced that 300,000 reservists had been called in, many young men tried to flee Russia. There were protests against the measure, with hundreds of arrests in the country.

  • Faeser: Protect Russian fugitives

Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said of a photograph of conscientious objectors and deserters in the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung”: “As a rule, fugitives under threat of severe repression receive international protection in Germany.”

Anyone who boldly opposes the regime of President Vladimir Putin and therefore puts himself in grave danger can apply for asylum in Germany because of political persecution.

    Nancy Faser

However, granting asylum is a case-by-case decision that includes security checks. “Wrong approach! Sorry. Young Russians who don’t want to go to war should finally overthrow Putin and his racist regime, instead of running away and enjoying the dolce vita. The West,” said Ukrainian Ambassador to Berlin, Andriy Melnyk.
