Given the Ukraine war and the energy crisis, the EU Commission sees power outages and other emergencies within the EU as possible.
EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Protection, Janez Lenarcic, told the German broadcasting network.
When an EU state experiences a power outage
The EU is therefore working on two scenarios. If only a small number of member states are affected by an event such as a power outage, “other EU countries can supply electricity generators through us, as in natural disasters,” the EU commissioner said.
If multiple countries were affected at the same time, so EU countries would have to limit emergency aid deliveries to other member states, the Commission could meet the needs from its strategic reserve. According to Lenarcic, the reserve for these emergencies includes firefighting aircraft, generators, water pumps and fuel, as well as medical equipment and now medicine.
How to prepare for power outages, tips in the video:
EU prepared for emergencies during corona epidemic
The EU Commission had prepared itself for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear emergencies during the corona pandemic.
All EU member states, as well as all other countries in the world, can turn to the EU civil protection program for assistance in acute crisis situations such as forest fires, floods, earthquakes and the like.
Crisis protection commissioner takes over in an emergency
Material and equipment assistance from other EU countries is then coordinated and forwarded by the program under the Crisis Protection Commissioner. He emphasized that in an emergency this can be done on the same day.
