Refugee flow from Ukraine continues: Interior Minister Faeser said that more than one million refugees have been registered in Germany. However, uncertainties remain.
More than one million refugees from Ukraine have been registered in Germany. Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) gave the news portal T-Online the number 1.002.763. “We saved the lives of many women and children from Ukraine,” said the SPD politician.
Faeser spoke of a humanitarian effort. “The longer the war lasts, the harder it is to house and care for so many refugees,” the minister said. He invited local and state representatives to coordinate refugee assistance next Tuesday.
Uncertainties in the registration of refugees
However, there is some uncertainty when it comes to the registration of Ukrainians living in Germany, such as how many of those who entered Germany have left the Federal Republic since the beginning of the war.
Faeser was concerned that more people would come to Europe via the Mediterranean and Balkan route. “This worries me,” he said.
Border controls with Austria had already been extended in May. On the border with the Czech Republic, the federal police are engaged in more and more covert manhunts. Austria and the Czech Republic also controlled their borders more closely.
Poland is the country that receives the most refugees from Ukraine
Millions of people have fled the country since the start of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. EU-wide, most have so far been registered in Poland. According to the Polish government, about 1.3 million refugees from Ukraine lived in Poland in September. In an EU comparison, the country once again took in the most Ukrainian refugees in August. 67,280 people have found protection in Poland, the EU statistics office Eurostat said on Friday.
According to the information obtained, 62 thousand 140 people came to Germany from Ukraine in August. These countries are followed by Romania with 9,715 people, France with 6,410 people, and Spain, which requests protection with 6,165 people.
