Post: UN condemns “illegal annexation” of Moscow

Categories

The UN General Assembly has been in session since Monday due to the Ukraine war. Now the plenum has unanimously condemned Russia’s annexation of Ukraine.

The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly condemned Russia’s illegal annexation of Ukraine. 143 of the 193 member states voted in favor of the resolution at the United Nations’ largest body in New York on Wednesday – 5 countries voted against it, with 35 countries abstaining, including China, India, South Africa and Pakistan. The resolution is not binding under international law, but demonstrates Moscow’s clear international isolation.

Germany persistently demanded a solution

Germany, among others, has called for condemnation of annexations in Ukraine, previously announced by Russia. “Fake referendums and illegal annexations by Russia are null and void,” German diplomat Michael Geisler said on Wednesday before the vote.

We are all legally obliged to refuse to accept them.

German diplomat in front of the UN: “Illegal annexation”

Geisler said that in its war of aggression against Ukraine, Russia occupied the territory and then held so-called referendums to secure this “land grab.” “Russia now threatens by every means possible to retain the territory it seeks to annex illegally. It does not even shy away from nuclear threats against a country that has voluntarily given up its nuclear arsenal.”

The UN General Assembly opened an emergency session Monday on the annexation of Ukraine’s Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions by Russia.

At the end of September, Russia vetoed a resolution in the UN Security Council condemning the annexations. Russia has no veto power in the UN General Assembly. The annexation of the four Ukrainian regions was harshly criticized and not recognized by the West.
