As of 2020, abortion is generally illegal in Poland. Since then, six women have died who would have had to have abortions, according to the EU Parliament.

At least six women have died as a result of not having an abortion since Poland’s tightening of abortion laws, according to a study by the EU Parliament. This is the result of a research mission from the European Parliament that presented its findings in Brussels on Thursday.

Robert Biedron, Chair of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, said:

Women in Poland now have fewer rights than in 2004 when the country joined the EU. we should not accept this

Abortion is generally illegal in Poland

In Poland, it is largely impossible to have a legal abortion since 2020. Abortion is legal only if the pregnancy resulted from rape or if the mother’s life is in danger. Medical personnel who perform illegal abortion face up to three years in prison.

“Brutal punishments” mean that abortions are virtually no longer practiced in Poland, sometimes even medically necessary to save the pregnant woman’s life, Biedron explained.

Women must prove rape

Until 2020, about 1,000 procedures were performed each year in Poland. According to Biedron, 107 legal abortions have occurred so far in 2022. About 20 million women live in Poland.

In case of abortion after rape, the woman must prove the abuse with an official document. Biedron said the arrangement, especially for women fleeing Ukraine, means they “go from one hell to another” in case of sexual violence.
