He was president of the House of Representatives. But after the results of the US midterm elections, 82-year-old Democrat Pelosi is no longer running for president.
Democrat Nancy Pelosi, one of the most powerful women in US politics, is resigning from her position in the House of Representatives. The previous Speaker of the Chamber of Congress said on Thursday that he will not seek re-election for the highest-ranking Democrat post in the House of Representatives.
Democrats lost control of the House of Representatives in the US midterm elections. You must now appoint a new faction leader. Pelosi will remain as MP.
First woman to be president of parliament
US President Joe Biden hailed Pelosi as the most important Speaker of the House in history. She made history as the first woman to preside over the Congress Chamber. She also distinguished herself as “a staunch defender of democracy”.
As Speaker of the House of Representatives, Pelosi ranks third in the state, behind Biden and the vice president. The Californian Democrat is considered an important liberal figure in American politics.
The 82-year-old Californian has represented a constituency in San Francisco, Washington since 1987. First, Pelosi served as Speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011, making her the most powerful woman elected in US history until Kamala Harris became vice president in 2021. She became Speaker of the House again in 2019, thus becoming the main political rival of Republican President Donald Trump. Pelosi was later elected to a two-year term in November 2021.
Attack on Pelosi’s husband
Pelosi has also received attention outside of the United States. Their visit to Taiwan in early August caused a serious disturbance in China. Eventually, a man broke into her home and badly injured her 82-year-old husband.
Politically, Pelosi has been under pressure lately to pave the way for her younger party colleagues. Hakeem Jeffries, 52, could initiate this generational shift. He would also become the first African American to lead a party in the House of Representatives.
