The UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution against Iran. The aim is to investigate the violent actions of the Iranian government against the protest movement.
The UN Human Rights Council has launched an independent investigation into the ongoing violence against peaceful protesters in Iran. As Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (The Greens) said, experts must document human rights abuses and gather evidence so that those responsible for the violence can one day be held accountable.
The Council adopted a corresponding resolution in Geneva on Thursday, with 25 votes in favour, six against and 16 abstentions. The majority of the body followed a request from Germany and Iceland. Some diplomats applauded after the President of the Council read the result of the vote.
China wanted to remove clauses related to independent investigation
Baerbock had come specifically to give voice to the thousands of people who are campaigning for a dignified and non-discriminatory life in Iran alone.
China tried to remove the paragraph calling for an investigation independent of the decision at the last moment. The German ambassador rejected it on behalf of the supporters, and the motion had no chance of being voted on.
