Recent Russian attacks have seriously damaged Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure. Water is running again in Kiev, but most of the city is still without electricity.
After Russia’s attacks on infrastructure in Ukraine, large areas of the capital Kiev and many other parts of the country were initially without electricity and running water. According to Ukrainian sources, repair work continues at full speed.
Kyrylo Tymoshenko, vice-president of the presidential office, said on Thursday that Ukraine’s electricity grid is solid again. However, he did not specify how many households were re-energized after the power cuts the previous day. Not only the network, but above all, important substations were affected by the attacks.
Klitschko: 70 percent of Kiev still has no electricity
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that 70 percent of the capital is still without electricity. But the water supply has been repaired, but the piping system is not yet working at full capacity.
As a result of the Russian bombing, all three Ukrainian nuclear power plants were disconnected from the electricity grid. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine reported that three power plants are back on the grid.
Ukraine: Shutdown means easing the electricity grid
Ukraine’s second-largest city in the east of the country, Kharkiv, has also experienced electricity problems and “emergency blackouts”, according to the local regional governor. Governor Valentin Resnichenko said, “There is electricity in about half of the Dnipropetrovsk region, which is also in the center.
He warned there would be shutdowns to relieve the power grid. Repair work was also carried out in other parts of the country, including the Rivne, Cherkasy, Kirovograd and Zhytomir regions.
On Wednesday, Ukraine again reported large-scale Russian rocket attacks on key infrastructure in the capital, Kiev. According to the information obtained, Russia launched a total of around 70 rockets and unmanned aerial vehicles to the country. According to the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office, at least 10 people were killed and 50 injured in the bombardment.
Russia denies responsibility
Russia did not take any responsibility for the destruction in the capital. The Russian Foreign Ministry said there was “not a single coup” inside Kyiv. Any destruction is the result of missiles fired from “foreign and Ukrainian air defense systems” from residential areas of Kiev.
However, the ministry spoke of “major blows” against “Ukraine’s military leadership” and “related energy facilities”. Moscow’s ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebensia, said Russia would continue to deplete Ukraine’s military potential until Kyiv takes a “realistic stance” in negotiations. The attacks on infrastructure are in response to “the country’s flooding with Western weapons and the unwise calls for Kiev to achieve a military victory over Russia.”
Zelenskyy: “Crimes against humanity”
At an emergency session of the UN Security Council, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks that hit Ukrainian citizens in the cold: “If millions of people are currently without electricity, heat and water, it is a blatant crime against humanity,” he said in New York on Wednesday. In his video address to the UN Security Council.
Selenskyj urged the Security Council “not to be taken hostage by an international terrorist (state)”. Russia, one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, has veto power. Thus, Moscow could block any decision of the committee regarding the Ukraine war.
