Fracking has been banned in Germany since 2017. During the energy crisis, the FDP wanted to change this decision. Chancellor Olaf Scholz flatly denies this.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) rejects the fracking method for domestic natural gas production and therefore opposes the request of coalition partner FDP. “Focus,” Scholz said:
Investors also showed little interest in the deal, the Chancellor said.
Scholz: “The effort, risk and rate of return is very bad”
When asked whether Germany should depend on others, Scholz replied, “No, but acting responsibly means not chasing delusions.” By the time the gas could be vented out of the deep layers, Germany would go so far with the expansion of renewable energies that “the cost, risk and rate of return would be very bad”.
The share of hydrogen in the green electricity mix was 8.7 percent in 2021:
Fracking uses chemicals and pressure to extract the natural gas found in the earth’s layers. Since 2017, the exploitation of gas deposits in slate and coal seam layers has been banned in Germany as, among other things, it is seen as a threat to groundwater.

Scholz to focus more on hydrogen
Due to the high natural gas prices in the recent period, calls for a return in hydraulic fracturing have been made. For example, FDP wants to use this financing method in Germany. Its secretary-general, Bijan Djir-Sarai, recently criticized the hydraulic fracking ban as being “dishonest and ideologically motivated”. Party leader Christian Lindner called for a quick introduction to hydraulic fracturing in early October.

Scholz confirmed to “Focus” that Germany will phase out its use of fossil resources by 2045. “We should focus our efforts on importing hydrogen and producing it here by electrolysis,” he said.
