“Murder by Starvation”: The traffic light coalition and the Union call on the Bundestag to recognize the brutal famine in Ukraine 90 years ago (Holodomor) as genocide.
In one resolution, several parliamentary groups want to declare and recognize as genocide the famine caused by the Soviet leadership in Ukraine 90 years ago. This emerges from the joint application of the SPD, the Greens, the FDP and the CDU/CSU.
Voting will take place next Wednesday.
According to a draft by parliament, the so-called “Holodomor” joins the “list of inhumane crimes committed by totalitarian systems, in which millions of people lost their lives in Europe, particularly in the first half of the 20th century”. The groups for which the Bundestag will vote next Wednesday.
Accordingly, the text of the commemoration day of the disaster, which is always celebrated in Ukraine on the last Saturday of November and is known in Ukrainian as the Holodomor, was completed.
The Ukrainian term means to kill by starvation and refers to the years 1932 and 1933. At that time, Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin had triggered a great famine in Ukraine through the forced collectivization of agriculture, in which several million people died.
To oppose Russian “narratives”.
In the resolution, the Bundestag wants to call on the federal government to “continue politically to support the memory of the victims of the Holodomor and its international promotion”.
In addition, it must “continue to resolutely oppose attempts to launch one-sided narratives of Russian history”. According to the draft, the events of that period in Germany and the EU are still not very well known.
Scholz and Baerbock open to Holodomor solution
The federal government agreed. A foreign ministry spokesperson said that Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (The Greens) was “very positive” about the project.
A government spokesperson added that Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) shares this view. “Frankfurter Allgemeine” and “Spiegel” made news about the project for the first time.
