Ukraine’s Ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, hopes to receive more support from his country’s allies and partners. Ukraine is fighting for peace in Europe.

Ukraine’s Ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, reiterated his country’s demand for more support in the war against Russia. Makeiev told the Funke Mediengruppe newspapers:

Peace does not fall from the sky. It must be fought for. And we Ukrainians are doing this on behalf of all Europeans.

Ukrainians wished for “more courage and determination from our allies and partners”.

2023 Goal: “The complete liberation of our country”

As the 2023 goals, Makeiev said:

The complete liberation of our country from the Russian invaders, the restoration of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, the return of our compatriots to their homes, the reconstruction of our country and further progress in integration into the EU and NATO.

The ambassador reiterated his demand for more weapons. This aid needs to be “intensified and strengthened in the coming months so that even more civilians can be rescued in Ukraine.” In addition, transformers and generators are urgently needed to repair the destroyed critical infrastructure.

Makeiev said that rebuilding will begin now, not after the war is over. Ukraine also depends on Germany’s financial and economic support from the EU and the International Monetary Fund.

Germany must take a leadership role for integration

On the issue of peace settlement, Makeiev referred to the ten-step plan of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This “peace formula” includes, in addition to the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian national territory, the release of all prisoners of war, the establishment of a tribunal against Russian war criminals, and guarantees of security for Ukraine. The Kremlin denies this.

Makeiev called on Germany to assume a leadership role with the aim of his country’s integration into NATO and the EU. This could be “groundbreaking” for Ukraine as well as for Europe’s post-war order.
