From computer scientist to waiter, teacher to newspaper delivery man, they are all desperately wanted. There is more to Germany than a shortage of skilled workers – the new “unemployment” threatens the economy and well-being. One of the main reasons for this is that the baby boom generation retires even at the age of 63. Would they rather retire at 70?
There is also a shortage of young people: most of Gen Z want to live more and work less, and they can choose whether they get the right education. Migrant workers have not been able to fill the gaps, at least in the current rate of migration.
Have politicians misjudged the situation? Where will the urgently needed workers come from in the future? Do the old ones have to work longer? What about young people or immigrants?
Maybrit Illner’s guest is Andrea Nahles, Head of the Federal Employment Agency. She meets Green Party leader Ricarda Lang and CDU economic politician Carsten Linnemann she. The tour was completed by Elisabeth Niejahr, former chief correspondent of “Wirtschaftswoche” and now working at the nonprofit Hertie Foundation.
“Workers are urgently needed – who will secure the economy and prosperity?” The theme “maybrit illner” is on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at 22:15 on ZDF.
