The head of the Munich Security Conference described Russia’s military situation as “very bad” in an interview. Russia is now China’s junior partner.

Christoph Heusgen, head of the Munich Security Conference, described Russia’s military situation in the Ukraine war as bad in an interview with “ntv”:

He is really bad. They failed to advance the front towards Ukraine. There has been fighting near Bachmut for months. They cannot capture a place that is not strategically important.

In addition, it is becoming increasingly clear that Russia is also experiencing difficulties in the supply of ammunition.

Heusgen: Xi’s visit is important for both countries

Heusgen also commented on the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Heusgen said Xi’s visit to Moscow was important to both statesmen. After receiving an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court at least last week, Putin wants to show his people that Russia is not alone.

He is now, so to speak, a leper of the international community.

The three-day state visit suited Putin well, especially since the war was not going as Putin had imagined and the country was not doing well economically.

Heusgen: Russia as a “discount gas station”

Heusgen evaluated the benefits of China’s state and party leader and Russia’s oil and gas wealth, saying:

Russia is now the discount gas station for China. Of course, Xi appreciates that.

Xi Jinping needs Russia in the system competition with the USA. Because of Russia’s self-isolation, Putin is now China’s junior partner.

Beijing relies on its own 12-point plan

Xi began his three-day official visit to Russia on Monday. China did not condemn Russia’s war against Ukraine. On its first anniversary on February 24, 2022, Beijing presented a 12-point plan for a “political solution to the Ukrainian crisis”, which was met with great disappointment in the West. Beijing is committed to a ceasefire and negotiations.

Putin has had an arrest warrant for war crimes by the International Criminal Court since Friday.
