Post: Brexit dispute: House of Commons for deal with EU

Categories

The British House of Commons voted by a large majority in favor of an agreement between Great Britain and the EU. However, Prime Minister Sunak is now faced with a new dilemma.

The British House of Commons voted in favor of a deal between the UK and the EU in the Brexit dispute over Northern Ireland. MPs on Wednesday voted overwhelmingly in favor of a mechanism that would give the Northern Ireland regional parliament a say in how the new EU rules apply in the British part of the country.

515 deputies voted in favor, only 29 deputies voted against. The voted provision is part of the “Windsor Framework” signed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the end of February.

Altar: Resistance from your own party

With the addition of the so-called Northern Ireland Protocol, the longstanding dispute over Brexit rules for the British provinces was resolved. Sunak’s victory over the opposition of his own party, the Conservative Party and the Northern Ireland Protestant Party (DUP), is considered an important success.

Party friends and former heads of government Boris Johnson and Liz Truss also opposed him. The altar victory likely quenched Johnson’s ambition to return to the top of government.

Lockdown could lead to new elections

But the rejection of the DUP could give the prime minister a headache. The party has been blocking the formation of a regional government in Northern Ireland for months. According to the 1998 peace agreement known as the Good Friday Agreement, it must always consist of the two largest parties, Catholic and Protestant.

There is still no sign that the impasse in the state will be resolved. In case of hesitation, re-election should be held. However, this may also benefit the Catholic Republican party Sinn Fein. It aims to unite Northern Ireland with the Republic of Ireland and emerged as the strongest party in the last election.

Agreement: No control between Northern Ireland and Ireland

The Northern Ireland Protocol was negotiated as part of the Brexit deal. It stipulates that the customs border between Great Britain and the EU must pass through the Irish Sea. This is aimed at introducing controls between British Northern Ireland and EU member Ireland, and preventing a re-ignition of conflict with Great Britain between mostly Catholic supporters of Irish union and predominantly Protestant supporters of the union.

But the regulation also brought difficulties, for example, when sending packages, medicines and taking pets with you. Some Protestants felt disconnected from England and called for change. These requests have been considered “within the framework of Windsor”.
