French President Emmanuel Macron met with Joe Biden ahead of his trip to China to show unity for Beijing. Expectations are high for the visit.
French President Emmanuel Macron met in coordination with US President Joe Biden before his official visit to China. The White House in Washington said both presidents spoke about Macron’s three-day visit to Beijing this Wednesday.
The US government’s brief statement on Tuesday’s phone call said:
China partner to end war in Ukraine
The French embassy in Washington said: “Both heads of state discussed their shared desire to engage with China to hasten the end of the war in Ukraine and participate in building a lasting peace in the region.”
After arriving in Beijing, the President of France wants to meet members of the French community in China first. Official talks will begin on Thursday. After meeting with Li Qiang, China’s new head of government, Macron will be received by the head of state and party leader Xi Jinping.
Von der Leyen: China with ‘game changer’ in Ukraine war
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is also participating in the talks. It was said from the Élysée Palace:
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine a good year ago, China has given political support to President Vladimir Putin. Beijing also cited the United States and NATO as the main culprits of the conflict.
While Xi Jinping met with Putin in Moscow two weeks ago and the Chinese head of government was still on the phone with his Russian counterpart, Mikhail Mishustin, on Tuesday, they have not spoken to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy once since the start of the war.
China courting its allies in the EU
Macron’s alliance with Biden also gives a signal of unity ahead of the French talks in Beijing. There had been previous speculation as to whether Macron could pursue a more independent path in dealing with the People’s Republic. China is courting Europeans to isolate its rival, the United States.
