The Roman Empire is a powerful empire of antiquity. So how did the Romans achieve this rise? Two teams looking for answers examine the most important Roman road of the period: Via Appia.

At the same time, underwater archaeologists are uncovering evidence of the First Roman-Punic War off the west coast of Sicily. And in ancient Carthage in Tunisia, scholars are investigating the Punic military port of Rome’s arch-enemies.

But very important clues can also be found north of the Alps: Well-preserved Roman galleys have been found in Germany. A team from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg is using these finds to recreate one of these legendary ships. But is it as seaworthy as the original?

In their search for evidence of the ancient Romans, researchers encounter findings that shed light on the lives of elites, middle and lower classes, and slaves. With “Treasures of the Roman Empire”, archaeological sites turn into real treasures that need to be unearthed.
