The controversial deportation flight involving asylum seekers from the UK to Rwanda has been cancelled. An order had previously been issued against the deportation of an Iraqi.
The first planned deportation flight from Great Britain to Rwanda with refugees of different nationalities was stopped by a court shortly before they left. This was reported by British media on Tuesday evening, citing government sources, after the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg blocked the British government’s plans with rare interference.
With the flight scheduled for late Tuesday evening, London wanted to herald the controversial Rwanda deal, in which the conservative government wanted to deter other people seeking protection from entering the UK.
Britain wants to take tougher measures against immigration
Under the agreement, those who enter the UK illegally and seek protection, regardless of their nationality or origin, are given the opportunity to be brought to the East African country and seek asylum there in exchange for payment from the British government. Even if they are recognized as refugees there, there should never be a return to Great Britain.
The United Nations and many other organizations see this as a violation of international law and a dangerous precedent. The English courts basically gave the plane the green light, but many individual cases were successful, so the number of passengers scheduled for Tuesday evening had been falling in the previous days.
In the hours before the scheduled departure, a rare intervention by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg saw the number of departures drop to zero and the flight was canceled altogether.
