Post: Inside Interpol – manhunt and politics

Based in Lyon, the authority does not conduct research on the site itself, but maintains information on the network, conducting searches and fast data exchange between states. More and more focus is being placed on the mafia-like structures of cybercrime.

194 countries participate in this unique organization and want to ensure that criminals do not feel safe anywhere. This also applies to one of the most spectacular feats: brutal, multiple sex offenders in Thailand electronically blurred their face in photos. Experts from the Federal Criminal Police Office in Wiesbaden managed to decipher the code, and the Canadian was caught just ten days later.

Former RAF members, the mafia and the dark web

Three German terrorists, known as “RAF retirees”, are also on Interpol’s wanted list and their whereabouts remain a mystery to this day. But Interpol Secretary General Jürgen Stock is confident: “Sooner or later we’ll get them.”

The greatest danger of our time lurks on the Internet. The Calabrian mafia ‘Ndrangheta, whose annual turnover is 54 billion Euros, is now infiltrating companies worldwide. Extremist groups network and radicalize without being recognized. Darknet represents a huge challenge for its partners like Interpol and BKA.

All the problems of the police department

The funding of the authority is controversial: it has not been significantly supported by large donations, for example from companies. In 2013, FIFA’s 20 million euro payment to Interpol made the headlines. Stock changed this practice to ensure the independence of his device, member states had to pay contributions according to their economic strength.

But Interpol has another political problem: authoritarian states like China, Russia and Turkey occasionally use the Interpol network to persecute critics of the regime.
