Post: “Negotiations with Moscow are needed.” What to brew in Moldova

Categories

MOSCOW, August 22 – RIA Novosti, Mikhail Katkov. In Moldova, protests have not subsided for more than a month due to the sharp rise in prices. Instead of coming to terms with the dissatisfied, President Maia Sandu accuses them of complicity with Russia. Experts foresee mass repressions for Chisinau under the pretext of building democracy and joining the European Union.

Sandu and the saboteurs

Since mid-July, residents of Gagauzia have gathered every weekend for rallies against price increases. Food prices increased by 32.5 percent, non-food products – 21, services for the population – 35 percent. Local demand is that President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilitsa go to Moscow to discuss the supply of gas and vegetable products.

However, the authorities do not pay attention to the requests. That’s why the protesters promised to move the protests to Chisinau in the near future. Their main slogans are “Stop milking us!”, “Down with Sandu!”, “For friendship with Russia!”, “Moldova, Russia!”.

Moldovans say that living in the republic since the beginning of the nineties has not been so difficult. But Sandu is unwilling to compromise. He claims that the protests were organized by supporters of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine and that these individuals may be preparing a coup. The president also reassures them that “criminal and corrupt groups” will help them. A day after these words, they noticed special police equipment in Comrat, the administrative center of Gagauzia. True, the locals were “trusted” by the fact that rice wagons were brought for the exercises.

Chisinau often accuses the Bloc of Communists and Socialists headed by former president Igor Dodon, as well as the Shor party of Ilon Shor of sympathy for Moscow. The first is under house arrest on charges of treason, and the second is on the run for the withdrawal of a billion dollars from the republic. In this case, rebelling is problematic, so another scenario for Sandu is “Russian invasion of Moldova”.

The head of state has no doubt that the republic alone cannot defend itself. For this reason, Sandu intends to seek support from NATO. “The closer the Russian troops are to the Moldovan border, the more urgent the problem,” he complains. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis promised to help Chisinau. True, he did not specify what actions Bucharest is ready for.

Only business

However, despite obvious hostility towards Moscow, the Sandu government hopes to delay Russia’s gas payments for August and September until the end of the year. “Moldovagaz” has already appealed to “Gazprom” on this issue. According to Vadim Cheban, head of the Moldovan company, current prices are too high for Chisinau to make timely money transfers: in June, blue fuel cost $ 980 per thousand cubic meters, in August it was already $ 1,460.

True, ordinary Moldovans do not pay either. Its debts to Moldovagaz amounted to 75.5 million lei (approximately $3.9 million) in July. Other citizens are accused of the company: allegedly because of them it is impossible to give money to Russia. However, Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spinu does not lose heart. “If Gazprom stops deliveries, Transnistria will also run out of gas,” the politician says. Previously, such blackmail has repeatedly worked.

However, it will be more difficult for Chisinau to reach an agreement with Rosselkhoznadzor. Recently, the department limited the export of herbal products from 31 regions of Moldova. According to official data, due to repeated violations of quarantine requirements: insects, pathogens and weeds were found in boxes with cherries, cherries, apples and peaches.

Sandu invited Russian experts to personally come to Moldova and make sure there were no violations. He assured that the same goods go to Russia as to Europe, where the requirements of customs officers are much higher. At the same time, he urged republican ambassadors in other countries to find new markets.

increase the temperature

RANEPA Professor, Doctor of Political Sciences Natalia Kharitonova, says Moldovan authorities have clearly summarized the problem as a lack of gas and the ability to supply products to the Russian market, but have not taken real steps to rectify the situation. . On the contrary, Sandu hardens his anti-Russian rhetoric to make himself a victim of the Kremlin and seek help from the West.

Maia Sandu is also trying to discredit those dissatisfied with its economic policy by accusing the opposition of supporting Russia’s special operation in Ukraine. Moldovan political analyst Igor Tulyantsev points out that the external nature of the protest would give him reason to initiate the crackdown.

“The President is discussing the reform of the security system with the director of the Romanian intelligence service, Raul Helvig. It can be concluded that the neighbors will help the Moldovan authorities to combat the discontented. This once again confirms that the Sandu regime has gained legitimacy. not inside the country, but outside it,” says the expert.

Tulyantsev believes that the collective West supports the idea of equating all opponents of Sandu with friends of Russia and suppressing them on this basis. The most important thing for Europe and the USA is that Chisinau does not return to Moscow’s sphere of influence. And it does not matter how the authorities will achieve this.

“Integrating into the anti-Russian ranks, Chisinau is constantly acting in the interests of the United States and the EU,” emphasizes Natalya Kharitonova: “It seems that only the instinct of self-preservation does not allow Sandu to launch a military operation in Transnistria. But apparently this It won’t take long.”

Experts believe that it is beneficial for Sandu not to negotiate with Russia in this context. The worse the relations between Moscow and Chisinau, the greater the dissatisfaction there. Then, with foreign support, the President of Moldova will be able to suppress the protests. Moreover, it will call it a struggle for democracy and European integration, and then ask the EU and the US for money to pursue reforms.
