Pozdnyakov described the FIS’s desire to allow Russian skiers to compete in tournaments as a positive step.
MOSCOW, September 22 – RIA Novosti, Sergey Fuks. The statement by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) on the possible admission of Russian athletes to participate in the competition, the head of the organization, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, told reporters that it is a positive step in the direction of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC).
FIS Secretary General Michel Vion said earlier that the federation is considering the possibility of Russian and Belarusian athletes suspended from international competitions due to events in Ukraine to participate in competitions under the auspices of the FIS, and a decision could be made in December.
At the end of February, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that international sports federations not allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in competitions due to the situation in Ukraine. A number of IFs have followed this recommendation.
“Russia is a big country not only on the world map, but also in sports. This is starting to happen everywhere, including the financial losses of competition. Our priority is to work on a possible qualification for the Olympic Games. We believe that most of our athletes will be able to take part in these tournaments with the start of the qualifying tournaments,” he said.
The Summer Olympic Games in Paris will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
